French club Nantes have requested payment from Cardiff City over the £15m exchange of Emiliano Sala, BBC Wales has learned.
Sala, alongside pilot David Ibbotson, was ready the Piper Malibu N264DB which lost radar contact close Guernsey on 21 January.
The Argentine striker was Premier League club Cardiff's record marking.
Cardiff has retained the principal planned payment until they are happy with the documentation.
